Fall Risk Evaluation Program

One in five people over the age of 65 are going to fall within the next 12 month period.

One in five of those people who fall are going to expire within the next 6 months from complications created by the fall

These statistics are much higher in the residential care population:

25% of the residential care patients who sustain a hip fracture will come back to the facility and will need to be moved into a skilled care unit.

  • The balance mechanism will be evaluated by performing bilateral bithermal caloric tests using warm and cool air to identify abnormalities in the peripheral balance organs.
  • The eighth nerve conduit audiological site of lesion evaluation will be performed on the patient to determine if there is an abnormal and/ or asymmetrical function unilaterally of the hearing system.
  • Postural hypotensionand possible hypertensive cardiovascular disease will be identified by conducting positional tests/evaluations on the patient. Elderly patients who are on anti-hypertensive medications are at a particular high risk for postural hypotension because medications are designed to reduce blood pressure.
