Ear Exams/Audiological Testing & Products
Ear Examinations
Senior Healthcare Associates ear examination services include medically necessary treatment of:
- decreased hearing
- plugged/fullness
- ear pain/discomfort
- dizziness/balance problems
- ear infection/drainage
- ringing/buzzing
Our state licensed, insured physician's will examine the resident's ears per the documented symptoms/complaints noted. If during the exam they find cerumen impaction present they will remove it. Since impacted ear wax (cerumen) is a serious problem among the elderly, this service has proven to be invaluable in improving the resident's hearing and their ability to understand and communicate with nursing home staff and family. The physician can also detect any hearing deficits that may need further evaluation.
Audiology Services
Our state licensed, professional audiologists will provide complete diagnostic hearing evaluations to your residents when prescribed by either our ear exam physician or the resident's attending physician.
Reasons that residents should have hearing evaluations:
- to rule out a medically treatable hearing loss, i.e., fluid, infection, etc . . .
- to rule out a more serious cause of the hearing loss, i.e., tumors, etc . . .
- it is important to document the patient's hearing acuity to avoid a mis-diagnosis
- to document and monitor the effects of medication on the patient's hearing acquity
- to rehabilitate the patient through the use of amplification if necessary
*MDS *HEARING AID REPAIR SERVICE *BATTERY CLUB PROGRAM
Our audiometric testing services include medical history, otoscopy, hearing testing and impedance audiometry. Following the testing, appropriate recommendations are made and follow-up services are provided. We will also provide you with the information necessary to complete the“Minimum Data Set” from information on each resident evaluated regarding his/her hearing abilities, handicaps, and/or rehabilitation procedures needed. If a hearing instrument is recommended, we will discuss approval with the professional staff and/or family. We will service instruments and perform maintenance checks of the resident’s hearing devices when we are at the facility and will handle repairs sent to our office. Also as a convenience to the facility, hearing aid batteries are available which can be mailed when requested through our Battery Club Program.
More than 28 million Americans have hearing problems, one out of every ten people. Among the geriatric population this proportion escalates to more than 25% more than four out of every ten senior citizens have a communicatively disrupting hearing loss. It is not uncommon for the hard of hearing residents to be labeled as a difficult person when in fact the problem may be due to a significant hearing loss. Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease have similar effects on a resident’s behavior as hearing loss does. In many cases, these hearing losses are correctable through rehabilitation.
