Diabetic Shoes

Diabetic ShoesDiabetic Shoe Program

Diabetic Foot Complications - No part of the body faces as much wear and tear as the foot. Unfortunately, diabetic patients have fewer defense mechanisms to cope with foot problems than their healthier counterparts. This is primarily due to neuropathy.

  • Nearly 20% of the U.S. population over age 65 (6.3 million people) have diabetes.
  • 25% of diabetic patients develop foot problems related to the disease.
  • Residents with diabetes represent 18% of all the residential care population.
  • The responsibility of keeping the foot healthy and preventing amputation falls on both the professional and the patient.

Therapeutic Shoe Program

Congress amended the Medicare statutes in May, 1993 to provide coverage for custom fit extra depth shoes and shoe inserts to people with diabetes who qualify under Medicare Part-B.

Designed to prevent lower-limb amputations in people who have diabetes, this Medicare benefit can prevent suffering, prolong walking ability, and save money.

Senior Healthcare Associates has developed a program to provide one (1) pair of extra depth therapeutic shoes and three (3) pairs of custom-molded orthotic inserts annually to diabetic patients.

Senior Healthcare Associates Diabetic Shoe Program is accredited in Pedorthics by the American Board for Certification.
